Why can't you find your keys and yet they were under your nose all the time?

This blog explains a little about how the left and the right side of the brain work together, but differently, in order to to create maximum efficiency of human function.

The right side of the brain has open attention, it sees everything all a once and is excited by everything new. It put things in context, or sees the 'bigger picture'.

The left side of the brain has a more focused attention, it separates things into parts and focuses on them.

The left brain receives the information from the right brain via the corpus callosum (the bit that joins the 2 hemispheres of the brain). The corpus callosum filters some of the information to reduce its complexity so the left brain can isolate things into objective parts.

This ultra focused state, narrows your perception through inhibitory neurones.  When you relax, the inhibitory neurons stop working and the right brain comes back online seeing the bigger picture again.

If we put this into context. Have you ever lost your keys and are franticly looking in the drawer and really can't find them?  Then you walk away and when you come back there they are right in front of you in the drawer.  When you walk away your brain relaxes and you can see the bigger picture, so when you return you can see the keys. Maybe next time you loose something, walk away, do something else, let the brain relax and go back with a more broader focus.
