This is one of my favourite figurines from the Willow Tree. I bought it for my Mum when my daughter was younger and for me it represents our three generations. Do you see yourself in this figurine? I see lots of women in my practice who find themselves in the Sandwich Generation. This is where they are sandwiched between dependent children and dependent parents. This Sandwich Generation has come about in the last 20th century due to having children later in life and increase in lifespan. When you add in working, running a household and a change in hormone balance it is no wonder many women can struggle with the demands of daily life. October is World Menopause Month with Tuesday 18th being World Menopause Day, and I'm sure we will be seeing lots in the media about the Menopause. There are lots of things women can do to help relieve some of the symptoms of menopause and having the support of those around them can really help. So for all the men reading please continue as you may be able to understand and help your partner, sister, mother or work colleague.
Manage Stress: We often feel like we have to do everything and this can become overwhelming particularly if you find yourself in the Sandwich generation. Ask yourself do you need to do everything, what can you let go, what can delegate and who can you ask for help. Sometimes just begin able to express how you are feeling can help to relieve stress. You may find if you are calmer everyone around you is calmer and things can work more efficiently.
Nutritious Diet: What and when you eat is very important. Getting the right balance of nutrients vitamins and minerals as well as balancing blood sugar levels is important and will help balance your hormones. If you are suffering from hot flushes make a note of any foods especially sugar or alcohol that may be a trigger. If you feel like you would like specific information about nutrition get in touch and I can recommend an excellent nutritionist.
Sleep: Women can suffer with night sweats, there are lots of things of things on the market with "cool technology' fabrics that can all help to keep you cool at night. Try to keep a good sleep pattern and watch your intake of alcohol it may help you feel relax but it plays havoc with your sleep hormones and adrenal glands.
Mental Health Support: Sometimes the menopause can increase symptoms of depression or anxiety. Remember you are not alone, all women will go through the menopause at some stage of their life so there are lots of other women as well as professionals out there to talk to.
Exercise: As hormone levels change you are at risk of developing osteoporosis. It is important to do regular weight bearing and light resistance exercise every week. This can be walking, running dancing. Exercise can also help to improve your mental health and sleep, so find something you enjoy. If you would like me to recommend a Pilates and fitness teacher get in touch.
Brain Fog: Women often complain of brain fog as a symptom of menopause. Again this can be compounded by stress and difficulty sleeping. Craniosacral therapy can help to calm the nervous system, relieve tension through the head and improve the flow of cerebral spinal fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. This can help to balance hormones, improve sleep and mental focus.
Hormone Replacement Therapy: I am not a Doctor and have little knowledge about HRT. If you feel you need to speak to a doctor or nurse about HRT and whether it can benefit you, make an appointment at your surgery.
